Summary
Dr. Alison Morrison-Shetlar, President of the University of Lynchburg and recently named a Top 10 President of 2025 by Education Insider, shares her remarkable journey of leading institutional transformation through crisis. Starting her presidency during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Morrison-Shetlar inherited a $12 million budget deficit, declining enrollment, and programs that weren't serving students effectively. Through radical transparency, data-driven decisionmaking, and unwavering servant leadership, she led the university through difficult program reductions and staff changes while maintaining humanity and empathy throughout the process.
In this candid conversation, Dr. Morrison-Shetlar reveals how she met with 1,500 people during her first months to understand campus culture, streamlined a 33-member board to 22 high-functioning members, and used transparency videos to communicate hard truths about sustainability. She shares her framework for leading from "front, beside, and behind," which explains why she's on her third iteration of a leadership team, and offers powerful advice for emerging leaders: learn the culture, empower your people, eliminate words like "but" and "failure" from your vocabulary, and always keep students at the center of every decision. As she prepares to retire in 2026, the university will present its first balanced budget in 14 years—a testament to courageous leadership during one of higher education's most challenging periods.

Topic 2 | Servant Leadership Philosophy in Practice
[11:05] The Three Positions of Servant Leadership
A masterclass in leadership philosophy. Dr. Morrison-Shetlar explains leading from "front" (being the champion and face), "beside" (building teams with complementary strengths), and "behind" (empowering others as a mentor and coach). She discusses being on her third iteration of a leadership team and why different transformation phases require different people.
[18:22] Making Impossible Decisions With Humanity
"There is no good way to lay people off." Dr. Morrison-Shetlar gets deeply personal about making reductions while maintaining respect and empathy. [21:30] The Role of Board Partnership
An unconventional approach: bringing board members to the table during the transformation process. Dr. Morrison-Shetlar explains how having board members hear the data firsthand and then advocate for difficult decisions created unprecedented alignment and support for institutional change.
Topic 3 | Legacy, Lessons, & Advice for Future Leaders
[24:55] Legacy Lessons for Emerging Leaders
